Rain Carbon Inc. (RCI) supplies Coal Tar Pitch (CTP) produced at our RÜTGERS plants for use in the manufacture of graphite electrodes

Graphite electrodes can be used in electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production as they are suited to high performance in conditions of severe heat and temperatures which are generated in this environment. Graphite electrodes are also used to refine steel in ladle furnaces and in other smelting processes.

Graphite electrodes are made from calcined needle coke and CTP. Binder-grade CTP is used in the first production step in the forming the electrodes. Impregnation-grade CTP is then used in the later impregnation process step to increase the density, strength and conductivity of the electrode.

CTP is also used for the manufacture of other carbon products such as carbon electrodes, specialty graphite, isostatic-pressed graphite or Søderberg paste.
