Climate Action - Our Contribution to a Decarbonized Economy

We understand the impact of our operations on climate change and strive to minimize it. We continuously work toward increasing energy efficiency by implementing energy management systems, investing in waste-heat recovery systems to enable the generation of clean steam and electricity, utilizing the energy made by our own processes to the greatest extent possible. We expect our energy efficiency measures and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-reduction projects to positively impact our GHG intensity over the next few years.

We have traced and evaluated our GHG emissions in a systematic and standardized way since 2018. During this timeframe, our operations were challenged by a global pandemic and a war in Europe, which also impacted our GHG emissions.

  • In 2020, the output of our carbon distillation and advanced materials businesses decreased while we simultaneously experienced an increase in our more emissions-intensive carbon calcination business, leading to an overall higher GHG intensity.
  • The steep reduction of GHG emissions in 2022 was the result of significantly decreased production volumes across our businesses due to a global reduction of demand in our industries, accompanied by an energy shortage in Europe.

Our carbon calcination plants produce approximately 80% of Rain Carbon’s total Scope 1 emissions, 98% of which are directly related to the calcination of our raw material, green petroleum coke (GPC), mostly through the combustion of its volatile matter and small particles. Since 1982, Rain Carbon has made significant investments to reduce its calcining emissions by using clean energy produced by our waste-heat recovery systems.

Rain Carbon continuously works to reduce GHG emissions from our processes by implementing energy efficiency projects and installing waste-heat recovery systems which:

  • Reduce the need for energy from external sources
  • Maximize energy efficiency by avoiding energy loss, which has already contributed to GHG emissions
  • Generate electricity and steam for internal use, while excess is provided to neighboring companies and power grid
